Time Well Spent

by Michael J. Pratt, Managing Editor

So, what did MRN’s Managing Editor think of the NMRA’s annual train show held in St. Louis this past July? Before I get into “the show,” a few thoughts regarding this annual experience — that I meet with both enthusiasm and timidity — are in order. First, I am always amazed at the diversity of architecture, food, and humanity this country encapsulates. Traveling to a different part of the country every year gives one a true definition of the term “melting pot.”

St. Louis is known for the famous arch, but spending five days in the city of the Cardinals, and now the Rams (sorry, but they will always be the “LA Rams” to me), I began to see so much more of this metropolis than the metal monument that dominates the skyline. For instance, within walking distance of the train show, you can find modern glass and steel skyscrapers nestled in between brick and stone buildings. Many of these older structures are going through renovations. Next to these are deep cavernous holes filled with broken concrete and rebar, making a scar in the earth where once stood a testament of countless hours of manual labor.

Searching a new city for decent eats is always a chore. We try to keep things simple — usually a fast breakfast, no lunch during the show, and a hardy dinner. Occasionally, a fine eating establishment can be found. This trip was one of those occasions, and breakfast on a few of the mornings was provided by one of the best pitch men I have ever heard. “Free coffee” was all the enticement I needed.

And the people? Let’s just say that we were treated with kindness and courtesy every where we went — even when we least expected it.

The train show is only part of the annual experience. This year, the show continued its tradition of providing plenty to see for another city full of active, and potential model railroaders.

Traveling to these annual shows is always a unique, interesting, and fun experience. Next time one is near you, make the effort to attend. For the sights and sounds of the many different places that make this great country what it is — not to mention all the trains — it is always time well spent.
