Thanks, Stuart

Many thanks to Stuart Thayer for the very nice article in the March issue about the Prototype Modelers Seminar. Most of the clinics sounded interesting. Who presented the one on Grain Elevators of the 1950s? I’d like to contact him or her for a reprint, if possible.

John M. Smith

Mr. Smith,

Thanks for the kind words about our coverage of the Prototype Modelers Meet in Naperville last year. We hope to keep you and the rest of our readers informed about other such events in the future.
As to your question about the clinic on Grain Elevators Of The 1950s, the clinic presenter was Lloyd Keyser. We certainly hope that this information will help you in your current and future railroad modeling endeavors.

Kudos, Questions, etc.

Gentlemen:

I always look forward to getting MRN. Would like to see more G scale coverage. Does anybody know what happened to Herald King Decals? I would like to obtain RF&P art work.

Don Galloway

More G scale..., so would we. Drop your favorite manufacturers a note to remind them to send new product info to MRN. We understand that the Herald King line is for sale, but no longer producing decals. — Ed

Dear MRN:

Finally got around to finish reading the February issue of MRN. Regarding the comments by Don Valentine on the F-M engines [Letters, Feb 2001]. What he says rang a bell with me. I seem to remember reading several years ago that an engine designed for locomotive use could be used for marine (naval) power, but one designed for use on ships did not have the mechanical strength to stand the stresses of railroad use. I believe this was in Trains Mag several years ago when they ran an article on F-M locomotives. Keep up good work. I really enjoy MRN.

Dear MRN:

I’ve subscribed for a few years ... love it. I’m trying to find your review of the Intermountain F7A kits and realize that an index of past articles/reviews on your web site would be very helpful.

Mark Granville

In case you have not found it, John Welther’s review of Intermountain’s F7A shell kit appeared in our June, 1999 issue. A review index would be a good idea. We will give it some consideration. — Ed

MRN,

I would like to see a monthly article showing individual efforts on model train layouts. Some pictures, a discussion on the process and products used would be nice.

Dear Michael,

I was somewhat disappointed that the Athearn Genesis F7A review failed to mention minimum/maximum scale speeds/amp. draw & est. drawbar pull etc. as noted in the Atlas GP38 review of the previous month. The only thing mentioned was starting voltage. Hopefully this can be addressed in a future issue.

Dear Don,

In Stuart Thayer's defense, each of our reviewers is located in a different part of the country, and not all of them are equipped to run the same type of evaluations. We apologize for the inconsistency, and will strive to be more consistent in the future. — Ed

Help is on the way...

Greetings:

We just read a request for an online resource for explanations of railroad abbreviations [Letters, Feb. 2001]. We aren’t familiar with any resources on line, but we do know a sure fire way to find most of what the requester wanted in either the 1928 or 1948 editions of the Rand McNally Railroad Atlas published by Kalmbach. We believe these have been out of print for some time, but a public library may be the best bet for finding one. If current abbreviations are needed, perhaps a copy of the Official Railroad Equipment Registry may be of help.

The following web site offers the ability search for a given reporting mark to find its corresponding railroad: www.railroad.net/marks/db.cgi?db=marks&uid=&view_search=1
